The Frankston Blues basketball club are pleased to announce that the exciting back-court duo of Sammie Simmons and Meg Jeffs are returning for the Lady Blues in season 2016.
As a life-long Blues player who commenced as an U12 in the Frankston Junior Blues program, Simmons is excited about the season ahead.
“I'm looking forward to playing for Frankston again. I've been here my whole basketball career and am excited to wear the blue singlet again and play alongside the likes of other former junior Blues in Kelly Bowen and Carly Chatfield.” Simmons said.
Lady Blues Head Coach Mike Brookens said Simmons will provide the team, which is shaping up to be one of the youngest in the SEABL next year, invaluable support on & off the court for the Lady Blues.
"Signing Sammie gives a relatively young team some much needed experience and vocal leadership. I value Sammie's professionalism and character and will expect more from her than what was required of her in past seasons offensively and defensively which I believe she is capable of." Brookens said.
Frankston Blues High Performance Manager Steve Blackley said securing the signature of Simmons was a priority for the club with season 2016 having a feel of it being a break year for not only Simmons but for the Lady Blues program.
“Sammie was a priority for me to bring back for the 2106 season. Although she has been playing for the Blues for some time, I think we will see her have a breakout season under Coach Brookens. The up-tempo style that the Lady Blues will play will suit Sammie and will allow her to use her speed and fitness to advantage.” Blackley said.
While Simmons has had a number of years’ experience in the SEABL, Meg Jeffs commences what will be her second year in the SEABL Lady Blues program. After a number of stand-out years with Frankston’s development teams, Jeffs will be asked to take another step forward in her senior basketball career, something Jeffs is looking forward to.
“I am really excited to be part of the Lady Blues SEABL team in 2016. Training with our new Head Coach Mike Brookens has already commenced and I'm eager to see how our new team comes together. He has a lot of previous experience in both WNBL and SEABL and I'm looking forward to learning and playing alongside a group of very talented team-mates and hopefully competing for a championship in 2016 season.” Jeffs said.
When asked about Jeffs, Brookens believes the sky is the limit saying “Meg is a young, bright and upcoming player in our league. She will provide much needed minutes at the point guard position playing an extended role which I am confident she can manage. Meg is a quality defender and has the potential to contribute significantly on the offensive end. I am excited to work with Meg and see her grow into her role." Brookens said.
Blues High Performance Manager Steve Blackley said with more minutes Jeffs will consolidate the faith shown in her from the club in seeing her reach her potential in season 2016. “Meg showed last season when players were missing that she could step up and play a larger role. This coming season she will be relied upon on a more consistent basis and contribute every game. I am sure Meg with a greater level of confidence will grasp the opportunities and be symbolic of the Lady Blues program taking another step forward in season 2016.” Blackley said.
With pre-season officially commencing over the coming weeks, more news will follow regarding further Frankston Blues signings for season 2016 and planned pre-season practice matches. See www.bluesbasketball.net.au for all your Blues news.
