Bowen & Standish Sign for Season 2016

The Frankston Blues basketball program is proud to announce the re-signing of Kelly Bowen and officially welcome Kayla Standish to the Lady Blues program for SEABL season 2016.

The former team-mates on Gonzaga University’s women’s basketball program from 2008-2012, where the Zags went a combined 115-23 overall record in their four years, reunite for what is shaping up to be a new era under newly appointed Lady Blues Head Coach Mike Brookens.

As Lady Blues Captain, Bowen had an outstanding 2015 which saw her finish second in league MVP voting and named as a league All-star averaging an impressive 22 points and 10 rebounds per game. Kelly had a career high 42 against Launceston and a career high 20 rebounds against Bendigo. On the back of her stellar 2015 season, Kelly signed with WNBL club the Adelaide Lightening, recently being announced as Captain of a rejuvenated Lightning program.

The reigning Lady Blues MVP was excited at re-signing saying “I'm super happy to be re-signing for another season with the lady Blues. I'm excited for a new roster and coaching staff and to hopefully chase down a SEABL championship. I couldn't be more excited to be back playing with one of my best friends and best players I have ever played with in Kayla Standish.” Bowen said.

Standish closed out her Gonzaga career as the school's leader in games played (138) and blocks (176). She also stands fifth all-time in rebounds (809); seventh in both points (1,583) and field goal percentage (48.8) and eight in free throws made (289) in Lady Zag history. She was named to the West Coast Conference First Team 2011 & 2012.

A 19th overall pick overall for Minnesota in the 2012 WNBA draft, Standish is well known to Blues fans as they followed her and Bowen’s careers which saw them team mates in 2014 with WNBL club Townsville Fire which finished the season runners-up to eventual champions Dandenong.

‘’I am very excited for this opportunity to join the Lady Blues program. I have never played in the SEABL so am looking forward to gaining the experience in what I know is a great league. Of course getting to play with Kelly Bowen was just icing on the cake. We haven't been able to play together for a couple of years so when I got the call from the club I accepted right away. Its sounds like the Lady Blues have assembled a great line-up and I look forward to being involved in a successful season under Coach Mike Brookens.’’ Standish said.

Standing 6”3’, Standish is expected to bring further versatility to the Blues frontline with Lady Blues Head Coach Mike Brookens excited about her acquisition for the upcoming season, along with Bowen, a proven commodity in an ever improving SEABL.

"The signing of this dynamic duo is really pleasing for the club and our team. Both Kelly and Kayla having played together at a high level and gives the team two players that will bring a wealth of experience and talent to the floor. I am looking forward to working with both players who I know are hungry to improve and further develop their games.” Brookens said.

Frankston Blues High Performance Manager Steve Blackley said having both Kelly and Kayla reunite is a great boost to the Lady Blues program. “Both girls were highly successful together on the court at Gonzaga and we hope to emulate that here at Frankston over the next few seasons. We will have some genuine size to be able to compete with the best teams in the SEABL.’’

As team-mates, Standish and Bowen helped Gonzaga to an 115-23 overall record in their four years; a 54-4 West Coast Conference record; four WCC regular-season title; three WCC Tournament championships; an 8-4 NCAA Tournament record; two Sweet Sixteen appearances; and Gonzaga's first-ever Elite Eight appearance.

Standish is due to arrive in Frankston in early March 2016 to join the Lady Blues pre-season campaign.
